Critical Role has produced a fan-favorite in Travis Willingham’s Yee-Haw Game Ranch. But the end of this season shocked fans with its re-appearance of villain Bast’Alar and the tragic death of helpful critter Tet’nus Terry.
The last two episodes of the season featured guest appearances by Matthew Mercer and Marisha Ray, knights sent to help the Chosen One, and his associate charge the game soul. Travis Willingham and Brian W. Foster have been a delight throughout the season, and have been playing such games as Mario Party, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Left 4 Dead: 2, and Mortal Combat. This season had them starting their journey in Jungle Ranch, moving on to Spooky Ranch, and finally ending at Holiday Ranch.
It was within the first season that fans got introduced to the lore of the world. That Travis Willingham is the Chosen One, who must play multiple video games and move between the realms to stop the feline warlock Bast’Alar and put the Gameverse back together. Fans have enjoyed the vast array of side characters that Willingham and Foster have encountered in their travels.
But the stakes have been raised at the end of this season. Tet’nus Terry (voiced by Liam O’Brien), returned to give support and encouragement to the adventuring group. But he was stopped by Bast’Alar (voiced by Taliesin Jaffe). Basta’alar revealed a shocking history with Terry and vowed his revenge. Unveiling his newest weapon and monstrous creation, Terry was eaten in a bloody display as the monster – a giant cat – opened up its chest, and a worm-like creature emerged. It was an updated version of Bast’Alar’s Specimen.exe, and the cast could only scream throughout the process.
This was a huge cliffhanger for Critical Role to leave on. It’s been promised that the third season of the Yee-Haw Game Ranch will return in Spring 2020. However, this presents a new problem for the Chosen One, as Terry was their means of transporting between the realms. With these unanswered questions, fans can only wait to find out what happens.
