Cruel Intentions is reported to be rebooted in the form of a show streaming on Amazon. The original 1999 film featured Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillipe in the starring roles. Cruel Intentions was a hit phenomenon, catapulting its leads into stardom. The film was a modern adaptation of the infamous French novel Dangerous Liaisons. The film utilized the elite world of New York’s Upper East Side even before Gossip Girl. Cruel Intentions followed spoiled Manhattanites Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil in their cruel bet to break a virginal girl’s heart. The film was savage and quickly became a cult classic.
The Cruel Intentions reboot is reportedly in the works for one of Amazon’s streaming channels, IMDbTV. In recent reports, the new show will not revolve around Sebastian or Kathryn. The reboot will feature a new set of ruthless step-siblings, this time in college. While details are minimal, these new characters will revolve around the hierarchy of Greek life.
The reboot is coming from writers Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, who have primarily been in high demand recently. Goodman most notably produced Preacher and the original iteration of Gossip Girl, which would translate well into a new crop of young adult characters.
Cruel Intentions Reboot
This is not the first instance where the teen classic came back. There were two sequels, including one featuring a young Amy Adams. But in even more recent history, a Cruel Intentions reboot was slated for 2016. Original writer and director Roger Kumble returned for a new story featuring Kathryn Merteuil set fifteen years after Sebastian’s death. Sadly this show was never picked up for order.
The new Cruel Intentions reboot appears to be a different story altogether, and there are no reports that Sarah Michelle Gellar will be returning. While tragic that we will not get to see Kathryn Merteuil as an adult, this reboot seems to be on the right track as it takes place at an elite Washington DC college. Viewers can watch the original Cruel Intentions on HBO Max.
