The Flash season 5 returns tomorrow, April 16th, with an episode titled “Godspeed”. To some, this episode title doesn’t mean anything. For fans of The Flash comics, they immediately knew who was on the way. The villain who can separate the Speed Force from other speedsters, Godspeed. The CW has revealed a first look at the newest speedster coming to the series:
Godspeed is a recent addition to The Flash comics but has quickly become one of the Scarlet Speedster’s most notable antagonists. First appearing in The Flash: Rebirth series, August Heart was a friend of Barry Allen at the Central City Police Department who got his speed from a Speedforce Storm. Barry, as he does to almost everyone he comes into contact with, revealed his secret identity to August and the two began to team up. However, August had ulterior motives. Fueled by getting revenge for his brother’s death, August takes on the name Godspeed and begins to kill criminals and other speedsters. Essentially, this storyline was similar to how the show handled the big Zoom twist in season two.
Over time, Godspeed has developed from a full-on villain to a more anti-hero role in The Flash comics. I think YouTuber Emergency Awesome says it best. Think of the character like The Flash’s version of Red Hood. That’s probably why he’s being introduced so late in season 5. Even though he most likely won’t be our big bad next season, Godspeed is sure to be a major player in the series’ future.
Although I thought the leaked set photos that hit the internet a few months ago looked a little better, I am still excited to see this awesome character come to life in live-action. As mentioned above, The Flash has already used a storyline similar to Godspeed’s origin so it’ll be interesting to see how the series changes it up in the next episode. “Godspeed” is also interesting in the sense that this is the directorial debut for Danielle Panabaker, who plays the role of Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost in the hit CW series.
