Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Talks Multiplayer Microtransactions

Cyberpunk 2077 is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated games of 2020 for many. And its November 19th release date is just around the corner. Developer CD Projekt Red has heavily detailed elements of the game’s single-player campaign. Despite that, the team hasn’t released much information on what the multiplayer will be like. However, during a recent earnings report, President Adam Kicinski spoke about what players can expect from the microtransactions in the game’s multiplayer mode.

Microtransactions likely cause many players to groan with disdain given how predatory some gaming companies have been with them in the past. But Kicinski stated the microtransactions in Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be aggressive. In fact, players will be happy with the content they spend their money on.

The goal is to design monetization in a way that makes people happy to spend money. I’m not trying to be cynical or hide something; it’s about creating a feeling of value. Same as with our single-player games: we want gamers to be happy while spending money on our products. The same is true for microtransactions: you can expect them, of course, and [Cyberpunk 2077] is a great setting for selling things, but it won’t be aggressive; it won’t upset gamers but it’ll make them happy – that’s our goal at least.”

It’s obviously too early for Kicinski to say what these microtransactions will look like in an earnings report. CD Projekt Red confirmed multiplayer for Cyberpunk 2077 in September of last year. But in January, board member Michal Nowakowski revealed it wouldn’t be out until 2022 at the earliest. Fortunately, everything we know of the game points to a massive and intricate title. Players will likely have their hands full with the single-player campaign for quite some time.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases on November 19th, 2020 and will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Google Stadia, and PC.
