Today CD Projekt RED streamed another ‘Night City Wire‘ update for Cyberpunk 2077. One of the segments, ‘Tools of Destruction’ gameplay trailer, shows that there will be at least five different types of weapons: Melee, Smart, Power, Tech, and Throwables. In the Q&A section with IGN Cyberpunk 2077 Senior Gameplay Designer Pawel Kapala goes more into the detail with three of them.
Weapon Types in Cyberpunk 2077
- Power Weapons
The most basic type, similar to contemporary weapons. But its simplicity hides brutal raw power. They can ricochet bullets off of surfaces and Budget Arms’ Carnage shotgun that’s made purely from steel could cut a person clean with every shot.
- Tech Weapons
This type of weapon uses electromagnetic power to charge and propel metallic projectiles to extreme velocity. You will be able to use Tsunami’s Nekomata sniper rifle to easily pick apart unsuspecting enemies dead through walls.
- Smart Weapons
As the name implies, Smart Weapons will utilize guided missile technology to make its bullet able to track moving or covered targets. Kang Tao’s eight-barreled smart shotgun, for example, can track up to eight different targets all at the same time.
- Melee Weapons
Unfortunately, Kapala did not explain in detail how melee combat works and how do they balance melee attacks in mostly ranged-oriented gameplay. But one thing that’s confirmed through ‘Tools of Destruction’ is there will be dismemberment in the game.
- Cyber Weapons
A combination of melee weapon and body enhancements. For instance, there are Mantis Blade, a hidden metallic claws to rip apart enemies that were shown in the very first teaser trailer; Gorilla Arms prosthetics that make your arms stronger, to either break gun turrets or just instantly knock someone’s lights out; and Projectile Launch System, lets you hide a number of small missiles inside your arm.
RPG Elements for Weapons in CyberPunk 2077
Aside from your personal character status that can affect how your V handles the gun, there are other things you need to consider when gearing up for missions through Cyberpunk 2077 story.
Weapon Drops and Rarities
In Cyberpunk 2077 you will be able to buy weapons from vendors or find better ones from enemies and loot caches all over Night City. The quality of your weapons will be dictated by four rarity tiers:
- Common.
- Uncommon.
- Rare.
- and Legendary.
Legendary weapons are not only unique because of their special properties that no other weapons have, but also most of the time will be locked behind “difficult choices” in the game. Such as killing or sparing the life of specific NPCs.
Weapon Modifications
There are two types of modifications you can give to your weapons:
- Attachments: Stuff like scope and silencers that you can mix-and-match to change both the attributes and the look of your weapons.
- Software Mods: Chips you install in your weapons to change its statistics such as damage, accuracy, fire rate, even adding chemical or non-lethal rounds effects.
