CD Projekt Red confirmed today via its Night City Wire live stream that the 1.6 Edgerunners update for Cyberpunk 2077 will be the last major update for the last-gen consoles. The news comes soon after the confirmation of the Phantom Liberty DLC expansion’s announcement that will be coming out next year. The trailer for the DLC showed that it will only be coming on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Stadia, and PC.
Edgerunners, which came out today on all platforms (including last-gen) makes some exciting changes, including the ability to use mirrors, changing your character’s face and body, along with the cyberware. It will also add Roach Race, an in-game arcade cabinet, similar to a mini-game.
Edgerunners for the game is launching alongside the animated series by the same name on Netflix. The series’ story will focus on David Martinez, an 18-year-old wannabe edgerunner who is in dire straights, but somehow gets his hands on some powerful cyberware. The anime series takes a page from past cyberpunk works like Ghost in the Shell and the legendary Akira. The show will launch on Tuesday, September 13, and the protagonist’s jacket will be available in the game from today.
Cyberpunk 2077 Edgerunners Update
As expected, the game and the anime will have a lot of overlaps. CDPR has hinted that some Cyberpunk 2077 NPCs will show up in the series. The developer also mentioned a new quest for the game that references the events of the anime, and also confirmed that the anime’s story is canon. Not only that, but the events of the anime and the game take place at the same time, and so some locations from the game will inevitably make their way into the anime as well. Along with that, many references from both the game and the show will be present in both.
The director of the game, Adam Badowski, said that with this update, the game can now be “fully experienced as intended”. It is unfortunate that this statement comes two years after the game’s turbulent launch. And Phantom Liberty coming out so soon yet skimping on the last-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077, fans are disappointed, and rightly so.
Making the situation even worse, the complete overhaul to the fairly limited police system and changes to vehicular combat will come as a future update, skipping last-gen. If fans have upgraded their consoles in the mean-while, they can easily upgrade their game to a current-gen version and even carry over their save files. And the Edgerunners update will also introduce a cross-progress feature that will let you pick up where you left off regardless of which platform you are playing on.
