Netflix has updated the listing for their original anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, based on the Cyberpunk 2077 game. The update has now listed a release date for the show. A full trailer for the series was initially posted on August 1st, with the series announced in June 2020. This announcement also follows the posting of the series’ vibrant opening sequence being posted to YouTube.
Netflix describes the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime as:
“The series tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City, a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he stays alive by becoming an edgerunner- a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”
Zach Aguilar stars in the English dub as David Martinez. Studio Trigger will be animating the series. It is expected to see the creator of the Cyberpunk 2077 game somewhere on the creative or production board, as the anime will be based on CD PROJEKT RED’s Cyberpunk 2077. Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill) will be directing the series. Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) is creating an original score for the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: Another Netflix Original Anime
The trailer especially gives viewers a dizzying amount of visuals to get them interested, and it looks like it completed its job well. Many are excited about the series in their own ways. One review of the trailer called it “a beautiful assault on the eyes,” which runs in theme with Studio Trigger’s colorful, fast-paced, and artful animation.
Still, many are skeptical about the prospect of another Netflix original anime (or show in general, for that matter). It’s hard to tell with the mixed bag of content that the platform has given viewers. However, many are hopeful due to the fact that Studio Trigger produces some of the biggest names in anime to date.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be available on US Netflix on September 13th. Other country dates for the series have not been announced.
