Declyn “Dex” Lauper, son of Grammy-winning singer Cyndi Lauper and her husband David Thornton faces criminal charges linked to a recent shooting in Harlem. The 26-year-old, who is the only son of the crooner and her longtime husband and actor David, landed on the planet in November 1997, six years after his parent’s wedding. Although, Declyn has since embraced music like his mom, becoming a rapper, his infamous run-ins with the law over the years have portrayed him as a troubled child.
Cyndi Lauper’s Son Declyn “Dex” Arrested for Firearm Possession
Cyndi Lauper’s son, Declyn, wound up in another criminal case this week involving a shooting near New York City. Per the reports, officers responded to a 911 call at about 7:15 pm on Wednesday about a shooting on W. 112th St., near Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd in Harlem. They found a 24-year-old male with a gunshot wound in his leg, prompting an investigation. Ultimately, they discovered Declyn in the area minutes later. The NYPD officers found a loaded Glock handgun and illegal substances in his possession, leading to his arrest.
Following his arrest in the confines of the 28th Precinct, Cyndi Lauper’s son was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He also faces charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Court documents confirm that Declyn’s firearm had seven bullets in its magazine. Per the filing, the rapper had the weapon in his possession “with intent to use it unlawfully against another. However, he was not charged for the shooting.
Declyn Released on Bail
Prosecutors set his bail at $50,000 cash or $150,000 bond, which was later lowered to $20,000 cash or $100,000 bond. Cyndi Lauper’s son Declyn has since been released following the settlement of the $20,000 cash by his dad David Thornton.
Meanwhile, first responders transported the injured male, who also possessed a firearm, to the Mount Sinai Morningside-St. Luke’s hospital for treatment in “stable condition.” The 24-year-old also faces criminal charges. Investigations into the shooting remain in the works.
This isn’t the first time Cyndi Lauper’s son would become embroiled in a criminal charge. In 2022, the cops busted Declyn in the driver’s seat of a stolen vehicle. He was charged with unauthorized vehicle use in the third degree and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree. Declyn walked free after completing five days of community service.
