Beloved play Cyrano de Bergerac is getting a theatrical remake. Based on the 1897 play written by Edmond Rostand, Cyrano is a tale of love and desire set in France during the mid 1600s. Peter Dinklage plays the titular role of Cyrano de Bergerac in a clever twist of the character’s appearance.

Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) takes the title role of Cyrano. Joining him is Haley Bennett (The Magnificent Seven) as Roxanne, Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as De Guiche, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Monsters and Men) as Christian, and Bashir Salahuddin (Snatched) as LeBret.
Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice) directs the film. It is written by Erica Schmidt and based on the original play by Edmond Rostand. Jason Cloth serves as Executive Producer.
Cyrano is based on the real life of the man Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac who lived from 1619 until 1655. He was a French novelist, playwright, epistolarian, and duelist. The play takes liberties with the story of the man and introduces a love interest in the form of Cyrano’s distant cousin, Roxanne.
The story of de Bergerac has been adapted into popular film twice. The first was 1987’s Roxanne starring Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah. The second was 1990’s Cyrano de Bergerac starring Gérard Depardieu and Anne Brochet. Despite his many talents, Cyrano is incredibly self-conscious thanks to his abnormally large nose and is filled with doubt because of it. Though he loves Roxanne, he feels he cannot be with her and that she will not accept him as a man due to his “deformity”. Complicating matters is young Roxanne’s love of another man, Christian de Neuvillette. Christian is a handsome man but is clumsy in the way of love. Together, the pair of men work together to woo Roxanne with Christian providing the face for our hero’s words.
Cyrano is a fantastic tale filled with love, action, and song. The timeless tale has been loved by audiences around the world since its premiere in 1897. The 2021 film is putting a twist in the beloved story and has a great actor to helm the main role. Look forward to this one in January 2022.
