Sometimes going for a specific role will not pan out. In an interview with Insider, Dave Bautista revealed he would not be playing Bane in the upcoming new DCU under James Gunn. This ends the actor’s pursuit of the role, which he revealed last year that he went to Warner Bros. to demand to play the iconic Batman villain who broke the Bat.
The decision came down to the Guardians of the Galaxy director taking on the universe as co-CEO with Peter Safran. While we currently know very little about the plans, according to Dave Bautista, any role like Bane would be going to “younger and fresher” stars after having a conversation with the director-turned-CEO.
“I have had conversations with James about that, but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting that whole universe, he’s starting from scratch and starting younger and fresher and I think you need to do that.”
Dave Bautista not playing Bane in DCU, but James Gunn may find a role for him
During his time at Marvel, the director helmed three Guardians movies and the Holiday Special. Having connections to those actors, he has mentioned that they could come over to DC. His goal has been to pair the right actor with the right role. So, even though the Guardians actor may not get his dream baddie role, he may have a place in a new superhero universe.
While Dave Bautista will not play Bane, fans will have one more superhero adventure with him. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the final film with this cast, meaning we will likely see some deaths. The actor has confirmed multiple times that he will no longer be in the MCU as he grows older and aims for more serious work. It is not confirmed who else will be making their exit or how the film will fit into Marvel’s plans with the rest of the Multiverse Saga.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the second film in Phase 5. It releases in theaters on May 5.
