Sweet Tooth, a new comic book adaptation signed DC Comics will premiere globally on Netflix on June 4, 2021.
Based on the works of Canadian writer and artist Jeff Lemire, the show was announced in 2018 and was originally meant to premiere on Hulu. Two years later, the pilot has been moved from Hulu to Netflix, and the first season is expected to consist of eight episodes. Dubbed by some as “Mad Max meets Bambi”, it takes place in a mostly rural post-apocalyptic setting where some creatures are human/animal hybrids.
Sweet Tooth’s story begins a decade after “The Great Crumble,” an event that “wreaked havoc on the world and lead to the mysterious emergence of hybrids – babies born part human, part animal.”

Threatened by the unsure origin of these hybrids – some suspect they are the result of a widespread illness – humans ostracise them with fear, often edging into violence.
DC Comics’ Sweet Tooth starts with the introduction of Gus, an orphan deer-boy, and Jepperd – a big tough human guy. Jepperd offers to protect Gus and to lead him to “The Preserve”, a facility known as a fabled safe-haven told among the hybrids of the world that offers sanctuary to their plight. Therefore, the improbable duo embarks on an “extraordinary adventure across what’s left of America in search of answers— about Gus’ origins, Jepperd’s past, and the true meaning of home.”
Fun fact: Thomas “Tommy” Jepperd’s character design in the comic books was inspired by an “aged Frank Castle” from Marvel’s “The Punisher”.
Netflix’s Sweet Tooth stars Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar, Aliza Vellani, Stefania LaVie Owen, Dania Ramirez, Neil Sandilands, Will Forte, and James Brolin. Sweet Tooth is executive produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s production company and is directed by Jim Mickle.
