The future of Capcom’s Dead Rising series is unclear after sources have told Kotaku that their main studio in the west will be closed. Earlier this year, Capcom Vancouver was hit heavily with layoffs that accounted for 30% of the studio in what Capcom called a restructuring. However, today employees have been informed that the studio will be shut down and Capcom has said that 148 people will lose their jobs and only a “skeleton crew” will remain until January 2019.
Capcom Vancouver was opened in 2005 and are most well known for their work on the Dead Rising series after the first game was developed in Japan. Dead Rising is a third person, survival action game that pits players again large hordes of zombies in different locations. After development was moved to Vancouver, the series became well known for craftable, wacky weapons that fit into the hack and slash gameplay fans enjoy so much.
They developed three mainline sequels with Dead Rising 4 being the most recent and was released in 2016, only receiving lukewarm reviews from critics and consumers. There were rumors of a new game in the series being developed, but now with the closing of Capcom Vancouver and the cancelation of all projects from the studio, it’s no longer clear. In a statement that was given to Kotaku, a Capcom rep said: “as a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan.”
Another game developed by the studio also will never see the light of day due to these events. Kotaku also reported in the same article that Capcom Vancouver was working on another third-person game, it was set it be in an alternate reality of New York and would have in the action-adventure genre. The game was extremely early in development and had yet to been greenlit so the possibility of seeing the project was still rather unknown regardless.
