Deep Rock Galactic is an indie game by Ghost Ship Studios currently in early access. This game is a personal favorite of mine, and I’ve been playing it from some of its earliest days on Steam. This is Update 28 for the epic dwarven mining adventure. Never tried it before? Think Left 4 Dead + Minecraft but with alien bugs. The new update brings two hugely anticipated improvements, bringing the project closer to its final release. Want to know more about DRG outside update 28? Check out my articles that discuss “Why Deep Rock is worth playing now” and “What to Expect from Beginning to Endgame.” For now, let’s jump into Update 28!
The DRG Space Rig Gets a Total Makeover
If you’ve been playing Deep Rock for a while now, you are very familiar with the player hub area, “The Space Rig.” While before all consoles were a bunch of duplicate screens that looks the same, they now each have their own look. Unique stations with creative details and new textures can be found all over the rig. My personal favorite is the various tools, equipment, and guns lying around the equipment terminal. A close second would be the Star Trek-style console for Deep Dives (the weekly endgame missions).
The world map is easily accessible for all four players at a time now. These quality-of-life improvements are much welcomed. Everything also got a new coat of paint! It seems with this update the dev team is making an apparent effort to make their game consistent in it’s polish while they prepare for v 1.0.
The Perk System is Completely Reworked
For a while now, DRG has had a perk system that allows players to continue to earn perk points even into the endgame. The new perk system works much like it used to with one important change; Perks are now color-coded to indicate they are passive or active. The Passive perks are mainly what players are already used to. These mostly grant better stats on existing game mechanics, without adding much new content. Not any more! Now every perk in Deep Rock Galactic has been updated or replaced altogether.
New perks such as “Beastmaster,” which allows players to tame an enemy to fight for you! (can you tell I’m excited about this one?) Others will grant dwarves powerful offensive attacks, or even new gear. One such perk changes the old fall damage reduction perk into small boosters you activate manually to slow your fall. Unlocking, testing, and mixing perks is sure to be a much more fulfilling system to engage with. Also, perks seem to be the last system that needed an update before v1.0.
Bonus Update: You can now Combine Skins
Finally, the last bit of content updated is the ability to equip skins and weapon frames separately! If you don’t know before, some skins will change the weapon by adding components, while others just changed the color. Now you can pick the style (or frame) and also equip any color-changing skins as well. This was actually originally a bug, but the community liked it so much they added it into the game! Check out this image of the possible combos from the original bug.
The update is live as of January 30th! If you don’t already own this multiplayer indie gem, it is available for PC and Xbox One. Also, check out the official DRG roadmap here. How do you feel about the new update? Anything you are still waiting for in update 29? Feel free to tell us in the comments section. And as always, Happy Gaming Friends!
