Demon Slayer Movie has no plans of stopping as it dethrones Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. In the battle between the number 1 film of all time in Japan, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train has claimed victory. With Miyazaki’s film clutching on the title for 19 years, it is now time to retire to the smash hit masterpiece by Koyoharu Gotouge.
The title exchange happened right after Christmas, December 26, 2020. The same day where they also opened 4DX screenings of the blockbuster anime. It is no longer a surprise that this manga-inspired anime movie overtook Miyazaki’s top spot. The reason for this is it is already breaking records and creating history one after the other. According to the Demon Slayer Movie‘s official Twitter account, the movie made JPY 32,478,895,850 or around USD 313,267,070.20 in only 73 days.
In the worldwide ranking, the Demon Slayer movie is still behind Tenet and is currently the fifth highest-grossing film of 2020. On the other hand, the anime is still lagging behind Spirited Away (USD 355,467,056 ) and Your Name (USD 358,331,458) on the worldwide top anime charts. Bear in mind that the movie is still not yet out in China and in the west, where it is expected to skyrocket its sales and take the seat as the number one anime of all time.
We recently reported that the anime is about to bring down Miyazaki’s beloved Chihiro, and it actually happened right after Christmas. On top of that, they also created history by being on Oricon‘s best-selling manga chart by occupying the top 22 out of the full top 30 with its 22 volumes.
Aside from manga, anime, and its movie, Kimetsu no Yaiba has two games in store for 2021. One is for PlayStation 4, Kimetsu no Yaiba: Hinokami Keppütan, where it follows the anime’s story. The other game is made for mobile, Keppuu Kengeki Royale, a battle royale game where players can either play Demon Slayers or Demons.
