Late Night Talk Show hosts are all the rage, as Comedians like Conan O’Brien and Stephen Colbert continue the legacy of the forefathers like Jay Leno and David Letterman. But have they ever hosted their show on the New York Subway? Well, that’s one thing Dean Dimitruk can say he’s done that they haven’t, with his YouTube Late Night Talk Show, Derailed Late Night.
The premise behind the show is pretty simple, yet brilliant, and is best represented in its tagline “It’s not on TV. It’s on the subway.” Dimitruk and his production crew bring along the essentials for any late night talk show – a man in a suit, a (portable) desk, coffee cups, and bongos – and interview unknowing riders in the short period of time they are on the train.
Most of the comedy lies in the surprise from the guests on the show, as they walk through a hastily set up curtain to see Dimitruk behind his makeshift desk and bongo man Jeremy Christian. Yet there is a certain amount of planned sketch comedy as well.
While most of the conversation is ad libbed, the aforementioned sketches are clever. Ranging from games like Camera Roll Roulette – going through the guest’s camera roll and inquiring about the pictures – and Two Word Tinder – describing why they’d swipe left or right in two words for tinder profiles – there is actually a fair amount of production that goes into the talk show.
Another interesting thing, alongside the show’s location, is Derailed Late Night’s format. Instead of an hour long show, the runtime of most talk shows, the show is put up on YouTube in quick videos. Each segment in the show is quick, as the entire videos range from three to seven minutes, yet manage to entertain.
Currently, Derailed Late Night only has four episodes and a couple of side shorts, with no consistent posting schedule. In a recent post regarding the series, one of the camera men talked about the premise for the series, and how they just make it for fun.
No word on when the next episode will be, but be sure to stay tuned to the site for updates on the up and coming Late Night Show, Derailed Late Night.
