Who would’ve thought that a show about a serial killer killing other serial killers would be so engrossing? Season after season, we see Dexter grow into a more fleshed-out character despite being a sociopath with no emotions or regard for human life. The Dexter reboot may prove to be no different.
The last eight seasons of Dexter were a wild ride and surely Dexter season 9 will be no different. While some may argue that season 8 was great in the sense that it left the door open for Dexter to make a comeback (which is exactly what happened), many fans of the serial killer would contest that the season finale butchered the ending.
Now that a Dexter reboot has been announced, there have been many rumors circulating the internet about how the show could end. Will Dexter bite the bullet? Will he get arrested? There are many theories out there and all of them seem so wild that they could be true. While many of these may seem out of left field, there are some logical explanations behind some of them that make sense in the context of the show. The ones mentioned here are probably the most common fan theories mentioned on the internet.
Dexter Returns to Miami
This theory doesn’t seem all too likely given the fact that Dexter would be throwing himself into prison at that point. However, there is a possibility here if there were a strong enough reason. We know from one of the trailers that Dexter’s son, Harrison, finds where Dexter is hiding out at.
Could Harrison be suffering from the same mental anguish as Dexter? Could he have a dark passenger after being soaked in a pool of his mother’s blood similar to how Dexter was? If this is the case and if Harrison was in Miami at some point and left a mess for himself, Dexter could make a return to Miami to clean up that mess.
However, during the last decade that Dexter has been hiding out, surely the Miami Police Department has figured out everything about Dexter aside from his location. It would be interesting to see Dexter make his way back to Miami towards the end and get the chance to see how that would all pan out in Dexter season 9.
There’s a possibility that he could also turn himself in if he were to go back. Maybe the guilt ate away at him all these years. Maybe he has a little remorse for what happened. Likely not, but one could imagine that this could happen in a Dexter reboot.
It’s All in Dexter’s Mind
This is a common theory that many fans of the show seem to think could happen. Dexter may be, in fact, just a lumberjack so miserable with his life that he fantasized everything from the show. He does this so that his life seems more appealing and less dreadful. Maybe Dexter has a wife and kid (Hannah and Harrison?) who live with him while he works his days away chopping down trees. Maybe he’s a lonely old man who has wasted his life away and fantasized about having lived a more exciting life.
Either this or Dexter went insane and imagined the whole thing. This could be interesting as well. This would be pretty logical given the fact that there’s some obvious trauma there after Dexter sees his mom be brutally murdered in front of him. This could’ve caused Dexter to have psychotic episodes that would’ve landed him in some deep water but instead of going to prison, he’s in a mental hospital.
Dexter is in this mental hospital and everyone that has been a part of his life are his caretakers. For instance, Rita and Hannah could be nurses who come to check on him now and then. Maybe even Deb and Harry were figments of his imagination. The talking to himself, narrating the show, supports this theory for Dexter season 9.
Either way, the concept of everything that happens in the show being entirely in Dexter’s mind makes sense. While it’s a rather cliché way to end a show, it just might happen with the Dexter reboot.
Dexter is on Death Row
Picture this: Dexter is on death row. He’s in the electric chair waiting to be executed. As he’s sitting there awaiting his demise, the entirety of the show plays in his mind (not as a fantasy). He pictures everything that has happened in his life leading up to this point. He sees the ghosts of everyone he’s killed standing around him as he waits to join them in the afterlife.
It would be quite something to see all of Dexter’s former coworkers like Angel and Quinn watching the execution as they would likely be the ones to put him away in the first place. We could only assume that Hannah and Harrison would be there as well.
Everything would come full circle and just wrap it up so satisfyingly. It would be a killer ending if there ever was one. This would make the most sense out of any fan theory. It would do the series justice and give fans an exciting and mind-blowing conclusion.
While it would be a rather gruesome ending, it only makes sense that a serial killer of Dexter’s caliber would be put down. Many fans likely won’t want to see this happen to their beloved Dexter, but how else would the show end? There can’t be a happily ever after with a show like this.
Closing Thoughts
These are just a fraction of the popular theories and hopes that fans of the series have for Dexter season 9. There are many more but these are the most notable. We can only hope that one of these theories pans out to be true as it would justify the ending of season 8 and redeem how it all ended.
It’s also possible to see a mash-up of these in some ways. Likewise, it’s possible that none of these theories will come to fruition and the writers will come up with something unique and blow our minds with the Dexter reboot.
How do you think the show will end? Do you think it was all in Dexter’s head? Do you think he’ll return to Miami? Only time will tell. For now, we can only speculate and get lost in the sea of fan theories.
