White vests at the ready – John McClane is still set to return in the tentatively-titled Die Hard: Year One.
Director Len Wiseman, who also helmed 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard (or Die Hard 4.0 for those living outside North America), has said that we can expect the new film to “be happening fairly soon”. In other words, despite the silence, the film is still going forward.
The previous film in the series, A Good Day to Die Hard was released in 2013.
Wiseman has said that the reason for the long wait has been due to script development.
The date is when the script is right which is when we all want to go. The script has taken quite a long time. I want it to be right, as everybody does. The truth is, we started prepping Live Free or Die Hard when the script was not ready. That process of working on the script as we were shooting the movie is not the funnest thing in the world to do.
As the ‘Year One’ part of the title suggests, the movie is a prequel and will take us back to John McClane’s early days as a rookie cop in the NYPD.
Although a younger actor will obviously play the younger McClane, Bruce Willis is still set to star as the character’s older incarnation.
“The core idea has not [changed] at all,” Wiseman said, “It’s still working in parallel, cutting back and forth, what we see in the ‘70s has ramifications on present day Bruce [Willis]. That hasn’t changed at all.”
There are also plans for the movie to feature a young Holly, McClane’s wife from the first and second installments – and perhaps even a reunion between the older versions of the characters.
The actor who played Holly, Bonnie Bedelia, hasn’t played the character since 1990’s Die Hard 2: Die Harder.
