When the original game released back in 2012, Dishonored was a massive hit among fans. The game stood out with its gritty tone, open-ended level design, and choice seeded within every action you took. It was easily my Game of the Year for 2012, and I know I’m not alone in that feeling. Dishonored 2 only furthered that idea with the ability to play as two different characters, each with different abilities. Following some poorer sales on that game though, Arkane said the series would be put on hold for the future. Thankfully, the team says today that those claims were misquoted.
In an interview with IGN Middle East celebrating the studio’s 20th birthday, Creative Director Ding Bakaba believes the series to not be on hold. “the rumors of putting the IP on hold was highly exaggerated and was misquoted”. This is huge news for Dishonored fans, as it means this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the series’ world. Despite that though, the team does want to make sure that fans know we’re not returning to the Kaldwin story. That story with Emily, Corvo, and the Outsider has been finished, and they want to move onto other things. That doesn’t mean we won’t be getting something within that game world again though.
For me, this is hugely exciting. Dishonored 2 is considered one of my sleeper hits, having done quite a bit to innovate on Dishonored 1’s formula. It simply came out at a bad time, surrounded by several other big releases like Titanfall 2. Mind you that’s just my opinion and don’t take it as fact, but it’s still a shame. Regardless, it will be exciting to see where Arkane takes the series next. Speaking of Arkane, this is a time for celebration. We congratulate the team for 20 years in service, and can’t wait to see what they put out in the future. To celebrate, there’ll be giveaways, behind-the-scenes looks, and much more!
As of today though, you can get Arkane’s first game Arx Fatalis for free. Just sign up for the new Arkane Outsiders program before May 31st, and the game will be yours for free.
