The House of Mouse launched its own streaming service earlier this week called Disney+ and it’s already caused its first casualty of the streaming war, Simpsons World.
Like a divorce following a failing marriage, it’s safe to say everyone saw this coming. No, not because of some insider knowledge, but because FX basically said as much earlier this year when Disney bought Fox. The family-friendly company spent $71.3 billion to acquire Fox’s not always family-friendly catalog such as the Deadpool or Alien franchise.
Your Netflix is safe for now as Disney+ is just shutting down the competition it already owns. The service has gained over 10 million subscribers since its Tuesday debut.
Unlike other streaming services, Simpsons World released in 2014, only requiring a cable subscription and log in to view the content. Now the longest-running scripted series, The Simpsons, with its 661 episodes and 31 seasons of The Simpsons will be housed on Disney+. FX Networks got the full library rights to The Simpsons back in 2013 for its newer services FXNow and FXX.
“We made a nine-year, very expensive, deal, we had the show exclusive for five years,” FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said during a Disney press conference. “We could see that the value of rights on linear channels would decline. That’s why we did that bulked-out online site Simpsons World.”
The Mouse Wants What The Wants
Disney Plus received backlash this week over the show only being available in widescreen. The aspect cuts out many visual gags that were meant for standard definition viewing, which a majority of Simpsons episodes were originally made in before HD.
The service also removed an episode featuring Micheal Jackson when launching this week. This falls in line with another revision Disney made to Toy Story 2 earlier this year, cutting a casting couch joke after the #metoomovement gained steam in recent times.
Networks are starting up their own services left and right, whether or not people have the money to pay for them all. We’ll keep you updated as the streaming wars wage on into 2020.
