Disney has released the official trailer for The Little Mermaid. We were graced with a stunning teaser trailer in September of last year. This new trailer gives us the biggest glimpse of the live-action version of the acclaimed 1989 movie. The trailer opens with a shipwreck that sends prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) plummeting into the ocean depths to his certain death. However, we then hear Ariel (Halle Bailey) singing her iconic melody as she rescues Eric and brings him to shore. From there, we get our first looks at all the reimagined characters from the animated film. These characters include King Triton (Javier Barden), Flounder (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), Sebastian (Daveed Diggs), Scuttle (Awkwafina), and the character that many have been most eager to see, Ursula (Melissa McCarthy). We got a glimpse of her and heard her evil laugh in a second teaser three weeks ago, but this is the biggest glimpse we’ve gotten of the iconic Disney villain previously voiced by the late Pat Carroll.
Disney’s new trailer for The Little Mermaid also treats us to Bailey’s remarkable rendition of “Part of Your World” as we see several scenes from the original movie recreated with stunning visuals.
Disney’s Official Trailer for ‘The Little Mermaid’ Reimagines Classic Characters
While many scenes in the trailer for The Little Mermaid will look familiar to fans of the original movie, there are some notable changes that are evident. One, of course, is that a black actress now portrays Ariel. While this garnered some hate from racists, many are celebrating this change, and Bailey has been “in awe” of that celebration. Another update that fans will notice is that Scuttle is no longer a male seagull but a female diving bird. This was done to feature the character in more underwater scenes.
This trailer for Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid should be a good holdover until the movie is released on May 26, 2023.
