For audiences who opted not to watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in theaters, you will be able to watch the film on Disney Plus on June 22nd, Marvel has announced.
The film premiered on May 6th, making its debut on the streaming service 47 days after its theatrical release. For movies released in theaters and on a streaming service, the 45-day mark has become the choice for some companies. Disney and Marvel have not quite hit the mark when it comes to releasing movies within 45 days, with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings coming to Disney Plus 70 days after release and Eternals with a 68-day gap.
Doctor Strange in the Production of Madness
Since its release, Doctor Strange has found success. It holds a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes and has grossed over $875 million worldwide. Leading up to that success came troubles from the pandemic and a change in directors.
When Multiverse of Madness was announced, it was set as Marvel’s first horror movie. While the final product kept that stance, its direction came into trouble. That led the original Doctor Strange director, Scot Derrickson, to leave the project and be replaced by Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi. Derrickson has since given his blessing to Raimi.
The film had to stop production in a few spots through the pandemic. Particularly for the portions of the film that were shot in London, which had severe cases of COVID-19.
You can catch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in theaters or Disney Plus when it arrives on June 22nd. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Elizabeth Olsen, and Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club). Through cameos and major roles, this made for Cumberbatch’s seventh appearance as the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For Elizabeth Olsen, it is also her seventh when you count her appearance in the after-credit scene of The Winter Soldier. Wong makes his seventh appearance with Multiverse of Madness but will bump that number to eight when She-Hulk hits the streaming service on August 17th.
