The remake of sea-themed animation involved the brightest minds in the industry. The Little Mermaid cast lineup included Halle Bailey as Ariel, Javier Bardem, the King, Ariel’s dad, Melissa McCarthy featured as Ursula, and Jonah Hauer, Ariel’s love interest, Eric.
Others who made their mark in the film were Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), and Awkwafina (Scuttle). There was also Art Malik (Grimsby) Jessica Alexander (Vanessa), and the unforgettable Queen Selina played by Noma Dumezweni.
Apart from the impressive cast, The Little Mermaid adopted the use of CGI to bring life to the underwater scenery. Most of the time, the cast remained in Pinewood Studios, in England. Some scenes were also shot throughout various destinations in Italy.
Stars were flown to Sardinia, an Italian island etched in the Mediterranean Sea. In 2021, when production commenced, producers shot inside Santa Teresa di Gallura, north of Sardinia. The Little Mermaid shooting explored other classical sites in Italy. This included the Castelsardo— it was the area where Prince Eric’s castle was filmed, Spiaggia di Rena Majore in Aglientu showed Ariel rescuing the Prince. Halle Bailey Casting Controversy Explained
Halle Bailey holds a significant sentiment in The Little Mermaid. Years before she dreamed of playing the lead role; she was hooked on The Little Mermaid animation. As a young swimmer, Bailey pretended to be the princess — gentle on the outside, but fierce and adventurous on the inside.
At a much-advanced age, she became saddled with the responsibility of bringing to life her much admired onscreen star— Ariel. Bailey became the second black actress to portray a Disney royale in an animation. Anike Noni Rose who voiced Tiana in The Princess and The Frog was the first— technically. But this significant role in the history of her race did not come without its fair share of struggles.
Though she easily slipped into the role, employing her skills as an actress and childhood memories of Ariel. But Bailey was attacked by naysayers who criticized a black woman playing the role of a white woman. Somehow, she was able to rise about the hate and instead, focused on having the best experience on set. In her words
“I just feel like this role was something bigger than me, and greater, and it’s going to be beautiful and I’m just so excited to be a part of it.”
How To Watch The Little Mermaid 2023 Remake
Following the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, Disney obtained a new mode of operation as regards the viewership of their films. Instead of creating a medium for it to be viewed on streaming platforms, the legendary production company preferred showing it in the cinema. This would mean that The Little Mermaid is only being accessed on the big screens.
While Disney gets people to leave their homes to adopt traditional viewing styles, the company is making quite the bucks. For about a month, the theater will continue to be the only place that would offer viewership for Disney’s latest drop. In the first week of July, sources claim The Little Mermaid will be accessible for streaming on Disney Plus.
Apart from expecting to see Halle Bailey in her A-game, fans should brace themselves for a longer version of the animation with more songs. This comes with a variety of songs composed by Alan Menken, the original co-writer of the first and only animation. Menken teamed up with Lin Manuel Miranda who wrote songs for Moana.
