The works of Dr. Seuss have inspired several live-action and animated movies as well as an entire area of Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure park in Orlando, Florida. However, Dr. Seuss’ iconic characters are now inspiring a new kind of content. According to a report from Deadline, a Dr. Seuss themed baking competition series is in the works for Amazon Prime Video.
Dr. Seuss Baking Competition?
The currently untitled Dr. Seuss baking competition series will challenge some of the United States’ best bakers to imagine and create cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other baked goods based on Dr. Seuss’ stories and characters. This includes characters like the Grinch, the Cat in the Hat, the Lorax, Horton the elephant, Yertle the Turtle, and of course Thing One and Thing Two.
The creation of this series marks a rare extension of the Dr. Seuss brand. Never before has the brand delved into an unscripted TV series, especially a baking competition for Amazon. The brand is better known for its animated features, such as 2018’s The Grinch, Horton Hears a Who!, and Netflix’s Green Eggs and Ham series.
While the new series will be dedicated entirely to Dr. Seuss stories and characters, it will not be the first time a Dr. Seuss theme has appeared on a baking competition show. Food Network’s Cake Wars featured cake designs inspired by Dr. Seuss’ work in the past. However, with Amazon Prime Video creating an entire series around the Dr. Seuss brand, it is unlikely to appear or reappear on any other baking competition show.
The people behind Cupcake Wars are producing the untitled Dr. Seuss baking competition show. It is also currently casting contestants.
Dr. Seuss — also known as Theodor Seuss Geisel — is an American children’s author, cartoonist, and more. He has written several iconic children’s books, including Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Oh, The Places You’ll Go! His writing and drawing style are completely original and inspire readers for decades.
However, in recent years, the work of Dr. Seuss has become a source of controversy. During World War II, Seuss crafted racist political cartoons of Japanese people and even supported Japanese internment camps in the United States. However, Seuss later regretted these cartoons and his support for the camps. This inspired him to write stories like Horton Hears a Who! and The Sneetches to combat both nationalism and racism.
