Dragon Ball fan productions have always been in a difficult spot when it comes to copyright. Oftentimes, Shueisha and other Dragon Ball property owners shut down fan projects despite the fans behind them caring so much about the property. It conflicts with many people’s perceptions of how to pay tribute. One fan project seemingly is taking the right steps to make sure they make an impact and keep the momentum rolling. Team Saiya-Slash is creating Dragon Ball Demon Breaker, a tech demo featuring new combat and traversal methods in an open-world setting. Since last summer, the team has been progressively sharing information about the project through Twitter. Finally, the team is ready to share the tech demo as they hope to continue game development in a new title.

Whilst there have been fighting game-style Dragon Ball creations from fans before; Saiya-Slash Team is seemingly creating within the scope of their project. Ultimately fearing a cease and desist claim from property holders like older projects, the team is working towards a new project after the tech demo’s completion. Yet all of the footage showcased thus far is very intriguing and is a testament to the skills of a small team of developers. Dragon Ball Demon Breaker is an introduction to what deeper combat can look like in a Dragon Ball setting. Showcasing a demo of Trunks as a playable swordsman whilst using Super Saiyan powers is a intriguing concept that has yet to be explored.
Though fans don’t know the full scope of the tech demo, the small teaser of a playable test version is exciting. After a year of waiting to see progress and new details, the Saiya-Slash team is ready to introduce their concept to the Dragon Ball world. Be sure to check out the original trailer too, published almost a year ago last July. Even as time goes on, Bandai Namco and other Dragon Ball developers pay attention to fans. That type of attention caused Dragon Ball FighterZ to become so successful as it united fanbases in the fighting game community. Tech demos such as these showcase what’s possible and hopefully inspire future games.
