Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot (previously titled Dragon Ball Game: Project Z) made waves at E3 this year with its exciting trailer. Bandai Namco had originally announced a release in early 2020. Happily, for Dragon Ball Z superfans, they really do mean early 2020, as in January 17th for PS4, Xbox, and Steam.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will differ from previous Dragon Ball games in that it will be an action-RPG focused on Goku’s story. Most past Dragon Ball games have had RPG elements (earning new powers, leveling up, etc.) but have been primarily fighting games with little to no story to speak of.
By exploring Goku’s story, players and Dragon Ball fans will really have something to sink their teeth into. As of now, it looks like the game will begin with the Saiyan Saga and go through the Buu Saga. It will also introduce a brand new character, Bonyu. Bonyu was designed by original Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. She was originally a member of the Ginyu Force but left because she didn’t like the Fighting Pose.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will feature side quests that will flesh out relationships and other elements fans of the show have missed. When asked what side quest he’s most excited about during an interview with PlayStation Blog, the game’s producer Ryosuke Hara said:
My personal favorite would be a side-episode focusing on Gohan and Android 16.
Here, you will discover the connection that Gohan and Android 16 had before the fight against Cell. So I’m sure playing this side-story, will bring even more emotion when Gohan evolves into Super Saiyan 2.
The game will also feature the arc where Goku and Piccolo get their driver license. Completing this side quest will allow the player to drive a car. Hara says that flying is obviously much faster, but driving is good if you want to “take a breath and relax”.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will release on January 17th, 2020 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC and is currently available for preorder here.
