The Razzie awards have always been controversial as it assigns awards for the worst acting performances. Of course, many actors take the dishonor in stride and even attend. However, the Razzie awards have recently come under fire for nominating 12-year-old Ryan Armstrong for her role in the remake of Stephen King’s Firestarter. The latest in the backlash is that Drew Barrymore has slammed the Razzie awards for the nomination.
Drew Barrymore slammed the Razzies CBS Mornings. She had much to say about the Razzies nominating Ryan Armstrong for her performance in The Firestarter. Of course, Drew has a connection to the movie because she was in the original version of the horror movie in 1984.
This is what Drew had to say about the nomination to Gayle King on CBS Mornings:
“I don’t like it because she is younger, and it’s bullying. We do want to be cautious about how we speak to or about people, because it encourages other people to join on that bandwagon. I’m glad to see people didn’t jump on the ‘let’s make fun of her’ wave and instead said, ‘This isn’t right.’”
Of course, The Razzies have apologized and removed Ryan Armstrong’s nomination for Worst Actress. However, people are still criticizing the organization. Nominating a 12-year-old for a worst actor or actress award seems like something anyone would have seen as a bad idea.
We hope this negative attention didn’t cause harm to the young actress. Despite being in the spotlight, young kids should be off limits to this level of scrutiny. More than likely, someone thought this was a way to be edgy. Drew Barrymore slamming the Razzies is an example of a Hollywood icon standing up for the up and coming generation of actors.
Many Slam The Razzies As A Celebration Of Bullying
The Razzie awards, also known as the Golden Rasberry Awards, have been around since 1981. It’s a parody awards show, which people call the counterbalance to the Oscars. It’s famous for honoring the worst in cinema instead of the best, and there are multiple categories. In fact, many awesome actors have at least one of these awards. Some see this as harmless fun, but the Razzie awards shame and bully actors. Getting a Razzie win could hurt people’s careers, even if they were simply not the best fit for the role but are otherwise great actors.
Drew Barrymore isn’t the first actress to slam The Razzie awards, but we’re glad she defended this young actress.
