The release date of Dune: Part 2 has been delayed from its October 20th, 2023 date to November 17th, 2023. The conclusion of Paul Atreides escaping a coup and joining forces with the Fremen will still be in theaters. The reason for the move was not specified.
The film will have some serious competition with The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, releasing on the same day. Despite the young adult franchise being massively popular, it seems to not intimidate Warner Bros. from putting out its sci-fi epic on November 17th. Regardless, it should be a good weekend of movie-watching for people interested in two blockbusters with stacked casts full of A-listers.
Dune: Part 2 Release Date Delayed
The news of the push comes not long after major casting updates. The sequel will be getting some heavy-hitters to enter the sci-fi epic. Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux (No Time to Die), and Elvis star Austin Butler are all set to star. They will join returning cast members Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgaard, and Josh Brolin.
Denis Villeneuve is back at the helm to direct and co-write the film with Jon Spaiths (Prometheus). Villeneuve, Mary Parent, Jessica Derhammer, and Cale Boyter will produce the film.
The Dune: Part 2 release date being delayed is not stopping anything, especially as Warner Bros. invests in more stories within the universe. Dune: Sisterhood is a prequel series coming to HBO Max. Johan Renck (Chernobyl) will direct an undisclosed number of episodes. The series, which dates 10,000 years before the events of the main story, will focus on Bene Gesserit, the group of women who hold magical powers, as seen with Ferguson and Chalamet’s characters in the first film.
A push on the release date of Dune: Part 2 seems worth it. The first film was a success, with all things considered with the pandemic. It earned over $400 million at the box office. The adaption of Frank Herbert’s novel went on to win six Oscars while being nominated for four more.
