Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s next sci-fi epic is set to head Hungary in August for planned reshoots. The film’s December release will not be affected.
One of the most anticipated films of 2020, Villeneuve’s Dune is the latest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic 1965 novel of the same name. The story revolves around the noble Atreides family- who are the leaders of the desert planet Arrakis- and the battle for Arrakis’ extremely valuable resources. With Timothée Chalamet in the lead role, the star-studded cast also includes Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, and Josh Brolin, Villeneueve’s interpretation of the film will see Paul Atreides, the son of the family played by Chalamet set off on quite an adventure.
Villeneuve who is coming off previous sci-fi offering Blade Runner 2049–which earned critical acclaim, Oscars for Best Cinematography and more- intends to split Dune into two films in order to give the vast and complex world built by Herbert the attention it deserves. First brought to the big screen by David Lynch in 1984, the cinematography for this two-part adaption will be done by Greig Fraser.
The film completed filming in 2019, and Deadline reports that cast and crew will be headed to Budapest, Hungary, where the movie shot in 2019 at Origo Film Studios, with parts of the filming having been done in Jordan and Norway.
The coronavirus pandemic has derailed several releases with Warner Bros announcing last week their plans to move Tenetto July 31 and Wonder Woman to October 2, the release date for Dune however remains December 18, as decided earlier. The unchanged release date in combination with several other films such as the Avatar sequels and Jurassic World: Dominion getting back to work, has given movie-goers and sci-fi fans hope that Dune will breathe some life back into the stagnant 2020 box office.
