Dune is a massive franchise. The brainchild of Frank Herbert, this sci-fi universe spans all types of media, including novels, films, and video games. The next video game entry in the franchise is Dune: Spice Wars, an upcoming real-time strategy game. Today, players received a closer look at what they can expect when Dune: Spice Wars launches. An official announcement unveiled a new faction of characters within the game, called the Smugglers.
In Dune: Spice Wars, players will take control of one of several factions and fight for power on the planet Arrakis. Tactics can range from political manipulation to outright confrontation with other factions. According to the game’s Steam page:
“Choose between subterfuge, political influence, economic supremacy, or open warfare to prevail and gain control over the most important planet in the universe! Use secretive agents to sabotage the plans of your opponents. Vote on political resolutions in the Landsraad to further your strategy.”
Who are the Smugglers in Dune: Spice Wars?
The Smugglers are the third faction in Dune: Spice Wars, the first two being House Atreides and House Harkonnen. Today’s new faction, the Smugglers, is a secretive group with a wide reach and a decent amount of political influence throughout the world. They are motivated by money and the promise of power. According to today’s announcement:
“In all aspects of their development, Smugglers are specialists in optimising their economic outcomes. Parasitizing the development of their neighbours, embedding their underworld into the smallest furrows of their productions, they are renowned for their rapid and meticulous looting of even the smallest wealth of Arrakis.”
Of course, political intrigue can only get you so far. Each faction in Dune: Spice Wars has unique units, which will undoubtedly come in handy during combat. The Smugglers’ units include Wreckers, Snipers, Free Company, Scavengers, and Combat Drones. How these units will fare in combat remains to be seen.
If you’re looking forward to this real-time strategy sci-fi game, you have a bit longer to wait. Dune: Spice Wars will enter Steam Early Access sometime this year, although we have no official release date. Be sure to check back here for the latest news and updates as they become available!
