Playing a long-running campaign in Dungeons and Dragons can run the risk of predictable and lackluster battles. Running this tabletop RPG requires enough work and creativity as it is, and sometimes thinking of the terrain used in each battle can be the last thought on a Dungeon Master’s mind. But a new supplement, created by the beloved Crit Academy podcast, can help make battles more dynamic with their supplement PDF: Fantastic Terrain.
The world of Dungeons and Dragons is full of magic, monsters, and divine power. These wondrous sources of energy infuse the land, leaving their mark on locales throughout the realms. In these areas fantastic events occur. Chaotic power suffuses the air where a powerful planar portal opened, sending random bursts of uncontrolled magic in all directions when the weave is accessed. Powerful ritual sites enhance the effect of dark magic cast by an evil wizard. Sacrificifal circles tainted with the blood of warriors cause creatures to succumb to pure blood lust. These examples of fantastic terrain can become powerful boons, or harrowing burdens if approached recklessly.”Â
The book contains over 50 unique terrain effects, advise on their practical application, as well as tables to scale the terrain to different character levels. These terrain effects include making warriors go into a rage, boosts to healing magic, and even unique items that can be used to attack enemies. This book also contains effects that drain a player’s hit dice, which increases the intensity of exploring as these hit dice are essential to rests between fights.
The Fantastic Terrain supplemental book is currently available to download as a PDF on Dungeon Master’s Guild, which is an online platform for fans to create Dungeons and Dragons additional content, creatures, spells, and campaigns. It can be downloaded for $10.95 and already has a 5/5 star rating.
