Dynamite Entertainment returns Disney’s Gargoyles to comic pages in 2022’s fourth quarter. Details are sparse, but the beloved franchise that aired on Disney Channel from 1994 to 1997 will return in comic book form. Dynamite’s license allows them to continue the story along with input from the show’s creator, Greg Weisman. This won’t be the first time these characters have a comic book title of their own. The Gargoyles haven’t been heard from since 2008 after their series with SLG Publishing was canceled. Dynamite promises more information on the series is to come.
What Can Fans Expect From The New Disney Gargoyles
As stated, not much information has been released yet. However, Dynamite Entertainment promises new stories that will be in continuity with the ’90s television series. Their license also allows them to reprint old comics previously printed. Comics like Marvel’s 1994 series contain artwork from established illustrators like Amanda Conner, Joe Madureira, Jimmy Palmiotti, Martin Pasko, Grant Miehm, and Mort Todd. Marvel’s Gargoyles series only ran for 11 out of the 12 planned issues, and Weisman doesn’t consider it canon since he didn’t have any input on it.
Dynamite didn’t reveal if SLG’s 2006 series will receive a reprint, but that series is considered canon since Greg Weisman did have input. Since it directly continued storylines from the television series, it’s difficult to think that it won’t be reprinted.
Gargoyles followed a group of creatures that were stone by day and flesh by night. They originally protected a castle in medieval times Scotland until a stone permanently turned them to stone. Millionaire David Xanatos excavated the castle and had it relocated to his Manhattan high-rise. Eventually, Xanatos freed the stony protectors from their slumber, and they began protecting the citizens of New York City. Weisman incorporated many Shakespearean details into the story, even naming one of the antagonists “Macbeth.”
