It’s clear that Elden Ring’s world, The Lands Between, was crafted with great care and attention to detail. From enlisting the help of George R.R. Martin to conceptualize the overarching lore (however limited it may be) to creating a massive list of interesting NPCs, FromSoftware has potentially created one of the greatest open-world video games to date. But it seems the technical side of the game isn’t exactly perfect. At least, that’s what a lot of fans are saying. Elden Ring’s most recent 1.09 update finally included ray-tracing, a feature that FromSoftware had promised earlier.
However, it took some time for it to finally be rolled out. The developers were cautious, warning players that enabling the feature could have a notable impact on performance. That could be partly because of the massive glowing tree that can be seen from anywhere in the overworld. However, players are not just complaining about the performance; they’re also unhappy with the quality of the ray tracing itself.
Elden Ring Players Aren’t Happy With The Ray-Tracing Update
Currently, Twitter is filled with players complaining that the ray-tracing feature doesn’t change the game’s lighting system significantly. While many of these complaints are direct, others are in the form of memes, in typical Twitter fashion. It appears that the complaints are about two significant things – first, the feature doesn’t seem to alter the visuals that much. Second, for some players, enabling the feature causes considerable drops in performance, even slowing down instead of skipping frames.
In the patch notes, FromSoftware mentioned, “Please note that performance – such as frame rate and resolution – may be impacted while playing with Ray Tracing on.” The minimum requirements include a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, 8 GB or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, 12 GB GPU, and setting the graphics to minimum.
Overall, the reception of the ray-tracing feature has been somewhat rocky, which is surprising given the immense praise that Elden Ring has received prior to update 1.09. Hearing anything negative about it is not something we’ve seen before. In other Elden Ring news, FromSoftware introduced PvP battles by opening up the Coliseum. They also announced a new story DLC named Shadow of the Erdtree, which is still a complete mystery.
