Elon Musk is ready to make good on his promise to resign as the CEO of Twitter once he has found the ideal replacement. The tech billionaire has faced criticism since acquiring the platform and assuming his role as the CEO. From becoming embroiled in Kanye West’s antisemitism drama to seemingly causing thousands of employees to lose their jobs on the platform, the business mogul’s decision to acquire Twitter has proven to be anything but a great business decision, at least in the eyes of his ever-increasing critics.
Elon Musk Moves To Resign as Twitter CEO
Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter. She will be starting in ~6 weeks!
My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops.

On Thursday, May 11, the icon took to Twitter to officially announce his decision to adhere to the voice of the public and step down. In his tweet, Elon Musk revealed he already hired someone to take over from him as the new CEO of Twitter. Meanwhile, he would assume a new position within the organization while also dealing with his responsibilities as the CEO of his tech company, Tesla. The tweet read,
“Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter. She will be starting in ~6 weeks! My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops.”
Aside from the revelation that Elon Musk’s Twitter replacement would be a woman, the billionaire left the actual identity of the new CEO a mystery. Back in December 2021, he conducted a poll on the platform, asking users if he should step down as CEO. The majority voted in favor of his resignation, prompting Elon Musk to promise to resign once he found someone foolish enough to become his replacement.
It appears he finally found the right woman for the job. But the identity of the new CEO of Twitter remains a mystery. Nonetheless, a new head does not necessarily translate to a change of ownership. On the contrary, he remains a major stakeholder in the company, calling the shots even as chief technology officer. Perhaps, Elon’s decision was more about reducing his workload than actually stepping down in line with netizens’ demands.
