The Bachelorette took a surprising turn on Monday night following the revelation that Erich Schwer’s dad Allan passed away just days before the season’s premiere. Viewers learned the sad news during the episode, which featured the hometown date between Gabby Windey and her 29-year-old suitor.
During the date, the ICU nurse got to meet and impress Erich’s family in Bedminster, New Jersey. His father, Allan, seemed especially impressed, with The Bachelorette contestant admitting his dad really liked Gabby. Sadly, Allan never got to see the outcome of the relationship between the potential couple, as he passed away just weeks later following a tough battle with appendiceal cancer.
The Bachelorette Aired Allan’s Struggles
Ahead of the long-anticipated hometown date, Erich Schwer revealed to Gabby Windey that his dad was diagnosed with cancer years back and had limited time to live. However, Allan proved himself a survivor and lived past three different predicted times of death. When the two finally met, they got along so well, with Erich Schwer’s dad admitting he admired ICU nurses. He told the TV couple:
“I’m happy. I’m positive, so that’s good. I really admire the ICU nurses. They’re so sharp.”

Before the meeting, Allan spent about forty days in the ICU due to his dilapidating condition but made a point of attending the hometown date. Despite the positive air around him, Erich’s father knew things did not look good for him, having undergone three rounds of chemo to no avail. He eventually died on July 6, just five days before the show’s premiere. He was 65.
The Bachelorette Dedicated the Episode to Erich Schwer’s Dad
While other members of Eric Schwer’s family made appearances on Monday night’s episode, the episode centered around his dad, who somehow made things clearer for the couple and viewers. In an on-camera interview, the real estate analyst said of his dad:
“He’s struggling for sure to be there to meet Gabby and for it to be like a family thing. I have to show my dad how much she means to me because it’s really important.”
True to his words, Erich Schwer and Gabby Windey experienced a new dawn in their romance following the hometown date. In her on-camera interview, the 31-year-old admitted that seeing Erich with his family made her feelings towards him even deeper. The Bachelorette contestant reciprocated those feelings, declaring to Gabby that he might be falling in love with her.
They have Erich Schwer’s late dad to thank for their blossoming affection, which heightened right after meeting him. The 29-year-old has since taken to social media to thank Allan for everything he did for him, also stating how much he missed his dad.
Hopefully, he could honor those memories by forging ahead in his relationship with Gabby and perhaps make it to the altar with her by his side.
