There never seems a time when Fallout 76 isn’t in the news. The bug-ridden and underwhelming online RPG continues to give potential buyers reasons to turn away. But this time, it’s about damage control – because players have managed to discover a secret developer’s room inside the game.
Now, it’s not unusual for developers’ rooms to be in games. From Final Fantasy VII to Zelda to Skyrim, these areas allow developers to test features of the game to ensure they’re working to full effect. From the physics of a chair to NPC interaction to weapon effects, the game-maker can safely carry out all manner of tests in these spaces.
But there’s something intriguing about Fallout 76‘s developer’s room – it contains unreleased items. A box called “All-Scrap” contains so-far-unreleased items such as Power Armour Paints including Winterised, Military and Atom Cats. The word is that these paints will be released in the PvP weapons update.
A number of Fallout 76 players have allegedly obtained the Paints and attempted to sell them on eBay. The subreddit Market76 has had to ban users from advertising these illicit items for trade.
Regardless, the developer’s room holds another curious secret. There’s an actual NPC in the room, fully modeled in great detail. As many – especially the game’s detractors – will know, Fallout 76 is completely devoid of NPCs because Bethesda wanted the players themselves to bring the world to life. While this is questionable, the NPC character, codenamed ‘Wooby’, will get defensive upon approach and flee from the player. It is thought he was meant to be a ‘rag-doll’ for testers to test weapon effects.
Curiously, others such as YouTuber ‘Dreamcast Guy’, have offered other explanations – maybe this is a sign Bethesda are planning to put NPCs in with an upcoming patch to deal with the controversy of their absence?
Whatever the reason, it’s clear Bethesda hate Fallout 76 players finding the room. Anyone found wandering the forbidden room will have their accounts banned. Yet, talk has circulated that players are creating secondary accounts to quickly transfer the items to their main one. How will Bethesda tackle that one?
