Just when you thought the Fast and Furious franchise couldn’t get any bigger it is revealed they are getting their own animated series. The announcement came monday morning, DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures officially ordered the series to take place on Netflix.
The series is set to revolve around the teenage cousin of Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel), the star of the Fast and Furious movies. Following in the footsteps of his cousin, Tony Toretto and his friends are recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization bent on world domination.
Fast and the Furious the animated series will be produced and run by Tim Hedrick (DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (All Hail King Julien). Vin Diesel will also serve as executive producer, along with Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan, who also serve as producers on the live-action Fast and the Furious movies.
Netflix Vice President of Kids and Family Melissa Cobb had the following to say about the upcoming series.
“We are thrilled to take our fantastic partnership with DreamWorks Animation to the next level with new opportunities from the vast library of Universal Pictures,” said Cobb. “The Fast and the Furious franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can’t wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humor and global appeal of the feature films.”
As one of the few film franchises that comes close to Marvel’s MCU, grossing $5 billion worldwide across eight films, the move makes sense. Especially considering the fact that they managed to partner with Netflix.
Films nine and 10 in the movie franchise will arrive in theaters April 2020 and April 2021. As of now, there is not set release date for the animated version to arrive on Netflix.
