Jeez, for a second I forgot there were nine of these things. Over that time we have seen countless cars with all sorts of body and engine modifications jump over gaps in slow motion with lots of tire smoke and engine revs. Secretly, I love it – but seeing the number 9 next to the trailer that just dropped of Fast & Furious 9 feels crazy. We’re entering Final Fantasy levels here folks.
The biggest surprise of Fast & Furious 9 has to be the return of Han Lue. (SPOILERS AHEAD)
With the way this film series has panned out, both his first and last (chronological) appearance was in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift. He made appearances in the three subsequent films despite being killed (or was he?), as it turned out that Tokyo Drift took place after Fast & Furious 6. What makes it even wilder is that in the post-credits scene of F6, it turns out that the person that killed Han (or did they?) in Tokyo Drift was none other than Jason Statham, playing the brother of the main antagonist of the sixth film who then becomes the antagonist of the seventh film (and even gets his own spin-off film with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson). Yeah, this series is crazy.
This series hasn’t got the reputation it has by leaving it there, however. Because of course, John Cena is here, and he’s playing Dominic Toretto’s (played by Vin Diesel) brother, who we’ve only just found out about. The stars are aligned for plenty of big meathead fights in Fast & Furious 9, and the trailer certainly alludes to this possibility, complete with many angry standoffs.
The Fast saga, which will end with its eleventh(!) film (part 10 is apparently being split into two films), is attempting to escalate the absurdity that the Fast & Furious series is known for, and perhaps nothing sums that up more than the scene at the end of the trailer, where Tej and Roman (played by Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson respectively) get into a car strapped with rocket boosters wearing astronaut suits while on top of a big jet. Trust me, that sentence was not made up in any way.
What do you think about the Fast & Furious 9 trailer? Looking forward to its June 25 release? Leave a comment.
