The Heroes in a Half-Shell are about to have some feminine company. IDW Publishing revealed on Twitter that an original, female ninja turtle will meet the brothers in issue #96. The news has created a buzz and as a result, the issue has sold out and gone to second print.
The Story So Far
First of all, if you are currently following the TMNT series by Tom Waltz and company, stop reading if you do not want spoilers. With that out of the way, let us continue. The new girl with turtle power is the secondary Foot Clan leader by the name of Jennika. Karai, who has fallen out of favor with Shredder, stabs her rival, leaving Jennika in critical condition. At a loss, Donatello uses Leonardo’s blood for an emergency blood transfusion that leaves her in a mutated turtle state.
Along with the tweet, IDW released concept art for Jennika as a turtle. She is clad in a cloak, with a yellow mask over her eyes and a claw on her hand. The transformation occurs at the end of the previous issue so Jennika has yet to showcase her skills as a mutant. It is unclear how her mutation will affect her romantic relationship with Casey Jones.
Female ninja turtle isn’t new
Turtle fans know that this is not the franchise’s first attempt to introduce a female member into their ranks. Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, a live-action television show premiering in the ’90s on FOX Kids, brought Venus de Milo to the scene. A character created for the show, the series was canceled after one season. TMNT has gone on to feature in other mediums, such as video games, movies, and toys. However, another female ninja turtle has not been seen until now.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #96 will hit shelves on July 31. How do you feel about a new female turtle? Do you like the idea? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
