20 years ago, one of the most divisive entries in the Final Fantasy franchise was released. Final Fantasy VIII is held in high regard for some, but for others, it is one of the worst in the series. No matter the verdict, it can’t be denied that Final Fantasy VII left a lasting impression on the gaming landscape with its robust mechanics and story.
Some are saddened that Final Fantasy developer Square Enix has skipped the celebration of the eighth game’s 20th anniversary, adding to the installment’s forgotten nature. Usually, developers make a big deal over something like this, perhaps by releasing a remaster, port, or simply sending out a heartfelt tweet. Many took to Twitter to comment on Final Fantasy VIII:
No love from
@SquareEnixUSA on this, the day of Final Fantasy VIII’s 20th anniversary. Luckily I have a little something to share on that topic soon enough.– Brittany Vincent, Shacknews
Originally released in Japan, February 11th, 1999,
#FinalFantasyVIII turns 20 years old today! While it went on to become of the most divisive titles in the main series, it’s ambitious story and robust junction system should not be overlooked! Here’s to you, FF8. Whatever…– PNP Games
Final Fantasy VIII is 20 years old today. Shoutout to those of you who begged their parents to order Pizza Hut so you could play it on the free demo disc.

Final Fantasy VIII was released in Japan on this date 20 years ago! It remains as not only my favourite Final Fantasy game but also one of my favourite games of all time. Oh, I also don’t care if you disagree. Like, I *really* don’t care.
– Hollie Bennett, CD Projekt Red
