If you asked any FF fan if they would like to see a Final Fantasy X-3, the answer would be an obvious yes. While everyone will have their own opinions on the “best game” in the extensive Final Fantasy series, we probably can all agree that Final Fantasy X/X-2 had one of the most memorable casts of characters supported by incredible storytelling. Not to mention, to see all of our favorite characters from X‘s narrative with next-gen looks would be quite a treat. Yet, the possibility of X-3 in development isn’t too farfetched, according to Tetsuya Nomura.
Japanese video game magazine publisher Famitsu allegedly had a conversation with Nomura (translated by RPG Site). He stated that an outline of X-3, conceived by Square Enix scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, actually exists. Nomura says the game’s development is currently in a dormant state, but there’s a small chance Square might give it “the green light” someday. This potential sequel would perhaps use the “audio drama” format similar to the bonus audio production of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster‘s cast.
However, Square Enix does have its hands somewhat full at the moment. With the Final Fantasy VII Remake being the main focus, development teams are hard at work on mobile spinoffs, remasters, and other new future-related titles. We mustn’t also forget these are the claims of “the Tetsuya Nomura.” He is the same director and leading designer for Square Enix who played a major role in the complicated Fantasy Versus XIII saga and the Kingdom Hearts series, which took almost 20 years to receive its third mainline entry.
Yet, we’ll just have to wait and see. Square Enix is certainly not incapable of developing a Final Fantasy X remake, nor is the large company unable to create a whole new sequel based on X‘s story and lore. Only time will tell if Nomura’s words will come to fruition.
What are your thoughts on a possible Final Fantasy X-3, and its potential story? Would you be interested in seeing how Final Fantasy X/X-2‘s narrative would continue? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments!
