Bungie has announced a new title called Marathon. The team shared this revelation in a teaser during PlayStation Showcase, which mainly focused on revealing its next Destiny 2 expansion chapter. It also introduced its first all-new project in over a decade. Marathon isn’t so new in the franchise, though. It’s based on a game that debuted in 1994. Bungie is yet to provide much information about its story particulars and/or launch window. However, we know that Marathon will be available across multiple platforms on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PCs.
Details on Bungie’s New Development: Marathon
Marathon will land on select consoles and provide a unique experience. According to Bungie, it challenges players in one-on-one shooting battles. Following the reuse of the name from its 1994 Marathon trilogy, Bungie has confirmed it’s not a remake and only shares the game world.
So far, the details on the new title are thin. Many Twitter users are wondering whether the game will be free to play. Others are still concerned about the title, wondering how much the incoming Marathon will borrow from the 1994 release.
Bungie first released Marathon in 1994 as an FPS placing players in a world invaded by aliens. As a soldier, you board a ship called ‘Marathon’ to engage in a shooting war against aliens. All this follows a rich narrative that allowed for the continuation of the title into a trilogy. The franchise later added two sequels, namely; Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity, joining in 1995 and 1996, respectively.
However, Bungie’s new game will not become a full, rich story. Instead, it will be an extraction 1v1 shooter game meaning that it will be majorly a side quest without an account narrative.
As we wait for the new game to unravel, Bungie promises that Marathon will offer an exciting sci-fi PvP extraction shooter upon its release.
