We are narrowing on Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling with Florence Pugh and the rest of her A-lister castmates. When the trailer was released in May, people online seemed more focused on an oral sex scene in a dining room between the Midsommar actress and her co-star Harry Styles. In an interview with Harper’s Bazar, she criticizes viewers for those reactions.
“When it’s reduced to your sex scenes, or to watch the most famous man in the world go down on someone, it’s not why we do it. It’s not why I’m in this industry. Obviously, the nature of hiring the most famous pop star in the world, you’re going to have conversations like that. That’s just not what I’m going to be discussing because [this movie is] bigger and better than that. And the people who made it are bigger and better than that.”
Filming a high-profile film with some of the biggest stars like Florence Pugh during a pandemic has its risks. Although she had not seen it in its entirety yet, the star could speak about the people she worked with, specifically the crew and medical personnel who worked as early as 2 a.m. to get the film done and ensure it was completed safely.
“If I shout about one thing, it’s that these people made that movie happen. They came to work every day on time and fully respected the process.”
Florence Pugh responds to reactions to the Don’t Worry Darling oral scene
Set in the 1950s, Florence Pugh plays a housewife who is married to Styles’ character. They enter an experimental community that aims to be a utopia, but when a housewife goes missing, the mask of the place falls apart as she discovers its sinister secrets.
The film is Wilde’s directorial follow-up to her comedy Booksmart. The film is written by Katie Silberman (Booksmart), Shane Van Dyke, and Carey Van Dyke (Chernobyl Diaries). The Van Dykes executive produce with Richard Brener, Daria Cercek, Catherine Hardwicke, Celia Khong, and Alex G. Scott. Roy Lee, Silberman, Wilde, and Miri Yoon produce.
Along with Florence Pugh and Styles, Wilde will also star. The film also stars Chris Pine, Gemma Chan (Eternals), Kate Berlant (A League of Their Own), Timothy Simons (Veep), Nick Kroll (Big Mouth), Sydney Chandler (Pistol), Douglas Smith (Big Little Lies), and KiKi Layne (The Old Guard).
Don’t Worry Darling releases on September 23.
