Oh, Metal Gear. I first joined you, as did many others, with the PlayStation’s legendary Metal Gear Solid in 1997. The Snake faithful may mock me for this, as they stroke their studly beards and bitch about bandwagons and ‘real fans’ and such, but nuts to it. There’s my confession. I apologize to all of you for not having got my MSX2 on for the original Metal Gear back in 1987.
Anywho, I may have been a little late to the party, but the PS1 installment amazed me from the off. We were dealing with a complex, convoluted storyline of terrorism, betrayal, double agents and triple agents, but one that had a ridiculous sense of humor too. Has any other game featured, as an Easter egg, the ghost of one of the developers, which can only be seen by photographing the steam from a guard’s piss with an in-game digital camera item? Because if it has, I’ve sure not played it.
Fast forward a decade or two, and we’re eagerly anticipating Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Since the whole steamy-pee-ghost thing, the series has brought us all kinds of madness, and the overarching storyline has become even more unfathomable and difficult to follow than Resident Evil’s. So what the hell is a franchise newcomer to do?
Whether you’re new or just plain confused, you should really take an ogle at this. Below, GameTrailers takes a shot at explaining the entire Metal Gear storyline in 12 minutes. If you don’t know your Naked Snake from your Big Boss (yep, I know, that’s a joke), check it out now and get up to speed before the Phantom Pain hits on September 1.
