As of today the anime streaming service, Funimation, is available on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
While many Nintendo Switch gamers have felt that they are missing out on the many available streaming services, anime fans are getting a beacon of hope. Funimation has launched its free to download application on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Currently, the app is only downloadable in the U.S. and Canada. Funimation stated that they have, “plans to expand to the United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico, and more countries in the coming months.” Before Funimation, the only streaming service offered on the Switch was Hulu.
About Funimation
For those who may not know what Funimation is let me explain. The streaming service focuses completely on anime shows/movies. They have hundreds of titles, including My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, Black Clover, Fairy Tail, and much more. It should also be noted that Funimation recently acquired, Crunchyroll, the other big anime streaming service. This makes Funimation the largest hub of anime titles.
While this may seem like a small victory in acquired streaming services for the Nintendo Switch, I beg to differ. This marks the fact that Nintendo is well aware of its gamers desire to have access to streaming services through their gaming systems. While the other streaming titans; Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or Disney Plus are nowhere to be seen. I think it is safe to say that in due time they will arrive on the console.
Of course, you’ll still need a Funimation subscription to use the app – at a reasonable $5.99 base subscription. Are you excited about this new addition to the Switch library?
