In honor of George Perez’s 68th birthday in June, DC Comics will run a tribute to the comics legend. Earlier this week, Josh Williamson of DC spoke about what the publisher has planned to honor the legendary comic book creator. This tribute will take the form of a two-page spread featuring Perez’s most beloved characters. The spread will feature in each of DC’s June periodical releases.
What Will This Tribute Look Like?
According to DC Comics, the two-page spread comes from a layout created by Dan Jurgens. From there, some of the comic’s biggest names, like Jim Lee, Dave Gibbons, Todd McFarlane, and more, collaborated on the piece. Dan Jurgens shared how “truly honored” he was to help design the tribute layout and has “admired George’s work since [he] first saw it.”
The tribute contains many DC characters that George Perez helped establish for DC. It also sees Perez himself amongst his many creations. Each character is drawn by some of the top artists in the biz and colored by Hi-Fi. An additional page accompanies the tribute and features a key highlighting the characters and artists involved.
Why is DC Comics Celebrating Perez’s Birthday?
The opportunity to celebrate George Perez’s contributions to the comic industry comes a year after the legendary comic book creator announced his cancer diagnosis. Perez announced he had stage 3, inoperable pancreatic cancer and had chosen to forgo further medication. This caused an outpouring of love, memories, and well-wishes from fans and others in the comic book industry. It also led to the republication of one of his most beloved creations, the JLA/Avengers series.
Now, this tribute will celebrate another year of the artist’s life. With his 68th birthday happening later in June, it is the perfect time to celebrate all George Perez has done for DC Comics and the industry. Along with the spread included in all of DC’s June issues, it will also be a variant cover for Dark Crisis #7. A special version of this variant cover will be for sale from The Hero Initiative to raise funds for one of Perez’s favorite charities.
