Speaking to Variety at the Emmy Awards Martin was asked why the hit show was ending. Martin said; “I don’t know, ask David and Dan when they come through. We could have gone to 11, 12, 13 seasons, but I guess they wanted a life.”
Martin went on to say; “If you’ve read my novels, you know there was enough material for more seasons. They made certain cuts, but that’s fine.” Martin went on to discuss other projects in the other Westeros periods; “We have five prequels in development that are based on other periods in the history of Westeros. Some of them just 100 years before Game of Thrones, some of them 5000 years before Game of Thrones.”

Variety went on to ask Martin if he knew the show would be ending with this season. “David and Dan have been saying for five years that seven seasons was all they would go. We got them to go to eight but not any more than that. There was a period five years ago where they were saying seven seasons and I was saying 10, and they won. Their the ones actually working on it.”
Martin then praised the cast and stated when this story ends, it ends. “All the actors as great as they are, are anxious to get on and play other roles.” he then went on to say, “That’s great, we had such an amazing cast.”
