God of War 2018 has two extra Realms that players can unlock for some endgame content. These Realms, Nilfheim and Muspelheim, have a series of combat challenges for players to overcome and a difficult Valkyrie boss awaiting them at the end. With the game becoming the most successful PC port of a PlayStation game to date, God of War is seeing both fans just getting their hands on it and those returning to the world of Midgard to experience the title all over again, and that includes these bonus areas. Getting to these areas and unlocking their secrets requires players to find items known as Nilfheim Language Ciphers that will grant you access to the Realm to complete the trails found within. The Chests that hold these Ciphers can be hard to open, with many needing you to have completed the game to access them. This guide will show you where to find and how to get the Nilfheim Language Ciphers in God of War 2018.
Where to Find the Nilfheim Language Ciphers in God of War
There are a total of four Nilfheim Language Ciphers that can be found across seven different locations, with six of them located in Midgard, with one being found within the World Serpent, this latter one being missable. These Cipher fragments are found in large chests similar to the ones that players will be ripping open over the course of the game, though these specific chest have a purple highlight to them like the chests that you open when getting the Muspelheim Ciphers. It is important to note that you may not always get a Cipher from the chest, possibly because the game is making sure you don’t unlock the Nilfheim too early. If you reach one of these chests and it doesn’t provide the Cipher, do not worry and simply visit another one. Below is a full breakdown of where to find all of these ciphers and how to access the Realm of Ice.
Lookout Tower Nilfheim Language Cipher Chest
The Lookout Tower is a location that you will need to row to in a boat found to the right of the bridge of Tyr’s Temple and to the left of the Muspelheim Realm Tower. Once you have docked here (or fast travel if you have already visited this location), go to the right and look around a rock to find the chest. If there are spikes blocking it, throw your axe at the device to the left of where you docked your boat. This will lower the spikes, and you will be able to open the chest.
Mason Channel Nilfheim Language Cipher Chest
You are going to need the Shock Arrows that Atreus gets during the main story in Alfheim. Once you get them, row over to the northern part of the map and go to the docking location to the right of the Mason’s Channel; next, a climbable wall will be blocked by Red Sap; use the Shock Arrow to destroy it and climb the wall. At the top, there will be a path blocked by rocks and a small landing you can climb on. Get up on the landing and get behind the rocks, shoot the Red Sap behind the rocks, and you will be able to access the Nilfheim Language Cipher Chest.
Ruins of the Ancient Nilfheim Language Cipher Chest
Row over to the area called the Ruins of the Ancient in the northern part of the Lake of the Nine Realms. Dock and jump over the piece of rubble, and you will find the chest with Nilfheim Language Cipher here.
Tyr’s Temple Nilfheim Language Cipher
There are two Ciphers you can find in Tyr’s Temple, and both are pretty easy to find. Once you reach the Temple proper through the main quest (the part of the game with all the death traps), you will go down an elevator and will find a door on either side and a Jotnar Shine against the wall. One door has falling spikes, and the other has spinning saw blades. Go through both doors to find a purple chest at the end of both of them.
The Summit Nilfheim Language Cipher Chest
Go to where you meet Mimir, which can be accessed by the Mythic Gateway by traveling to the location named “The Summit.” From the Gateway, run-up to the big, circular platform and run to the right of the tree Mimir was once part of. Climb down the wall to a snowy cliffside and stick to the left until you find another cliff you can climb down. Get down to a flat area with no snow, and you will find the Cipher chest.
World Serpent Nilfheim Language Cipher
The only missable Nilfheim Language Cipher Chest, you will enter the belly of the beast only once in the main quest mission, “Jotunheim In Reach.” At the end of the mission, look to the left of the golden chest where you get Mimir’s eye, and you will see the Nilfheim Language Cipher Chest across a small gap.
Once you find four of the Nilfheim Language Ciphers in God of War at any of these seven locations, return to the Bifrost in the Realm Travel Room, and you will be able to access the Realm of Ice, Nilfheim.
