Santa Monica released God of War Ragnarok, marking the first cross-gen release in the God of War franchise. The game’s sales are going pretty well, and it has received positive feedback from the game committee. In fact, it is one of the highest-rated games of 2022 and is behind only Elden Ring among the titles released this year. Furthermore, it received better reviews than all of Sony’s first-party PS5 games. So, how would this game, which requires quite powerful hardware, look on the PS2 console, which marked an era? A fan recreated God of War Ragnarok as a PS2 title.

God of War Ragnarok is the ninth installment in the series, the ninth chronologically, and the sequel to 2018’s God of War. Loosely based on Norse mythology, the game is set in ancient Scandinavia and features series protagonist Kratos and his teenage son Atreus. Concluding the Norse era of the series, the game covers Ragnarok. This eschatological event is central to Norse mythology and was foretold to happen in the previous game after Kratos killed the Æsir god Baldur.
A YouTuber named Speclizer shows what God of War Ragnarok, which is currently available for PS4 and PS5, would look like if it were released on PS2. As known, PS2 is the best-selling game system overall, with over 155 million units worldwide. The 8-minute video begins with Kratos encountering Thor and shows some of the in-game scenes with PS2-style graphics. The video naturally showcases missing textures and even shows Kratos encountering Freya, who is missing most of her body, in one of the later scenes.
PS5 owners can play God of War Ragranok, released this year, in 4K resolution, and it shows how much the gaming industry has evolved over the past 22 years compared to the game’s graphics on PS2, released in 2000.
