After two seasons, HBO Max has canceled the Gossip Girl reboot. This comes toward the tail-end of the current season as the finale is ready to air on HBO and its streaming companion on January 26.
The original series ran from 2007 to 2012 for 121 episodes. The canceled Gossip Girl reboot was created by Joshua Safran, who executive produced the original series. Creators of the CW series, Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, executive produced with Safran on the new interpretation based on the novel by Cecily von Ziegesar. Safran served as the showrunner of the HBO take on the novel and CW series.
The company has been known for cutting projects for cost-related reasons. Infamously, last year Batgirl got axed, but other shows have faced similar fates. Westworld was set to have a fifth and final season but was both canceled and removed from HBO Max. In the case of Safran’s show, it is more due to performance, especially when looking at other YA projects, like Pretty Little Liars.
Gossip Girl reboot canceled after two seasons by HBO Max
The original series centered on privileged teens with no secrets due to a blogger watching them. The new series follows a new generation of New York teens facing similar issues but with a social media twist.
Right when HBO Max canceled Gossip Girl, it was finding its footing. The first season was poorly received as it has a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. The second season had fewer reviews, but it still managed 100% of the nine reviews submitted. Both seasons received scores from audiences in the 60% range.
You can still watch the series on HBO Max. It stars Jordan Alexander (Sacred Lies), Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2), Tavi Gevinson (Neo Yokio), Eli Brown (Wrath of Man), Thomas Doherty (Legacies), Emily Alyn Lind (Doctor Sleep), and Johnathan Fernandez (Lethal Weapon).
