Fox has announced that Gotham will return for a fifth (and final) season. The final season is expected to have around 13 episodes and will air sometime in the mid-season for the network.
Fans of the Batman prequel series have been patiently waiting for some kind of statement on Gotham’s status for weeks.
There were rumors that Gotham’s fate would be tied to Fox’s ability to recast Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon. Clayne Crawford, who played Riggs for two seasons, had just been fired and it was heavily speculated that if Fox renews Lethal Weapon, Gotham was sure to be on the chopping block.
Thankfully, those rumors proved to be false as both Gotham and Lethal Weapon have been renewed.
Gotham had just seemed to find its footing and move on from the prequel set before Bruce Wayne dons the iconic cowl. Season five is now set to be an origin story for the Dark Knight and some of his rogues. Canceling the series before fans get to see Batman in action would have essentially been an enormous tease to the audience without ever paying it off. I’m looking at you Smallville.
Gotham’s season four finale will air May 17th on Fox. The episode is titled No Man’s Land. Here is the synopsis for the upcoming finale:
“Jeremiah warns a skeptical Gordon of more destruction coming Gotham’s way, and Gordon is forced to make a potentially devastating decision. Meanwhile, Barbara rallies together a team to secure her position, as alliances in the underworld shift and prove no one can be trusted. Then, Bruce is forced to come to terms with the future.”
